Every San Diego bachelorette plan starts with somebody saying rooftop. Fine. The city has fewer real ones than Instagram would suggest.
Here are the ones that actually exist, what it costs to get upstairs, and the one booking rule that decides whether the day works.
Downtown and Little Italy
Altitude Sky Lounge is the big one — above Petco Park, looking out across the stadium and the bay, and the only rooftop club downtown with a happy hour: Monday to Friday 5 to 7, $5 domestic drafts and $7 premium wells. With a group, that window decides whether this is a reasonable afternoon or a tab nobody wants to split.
The Nolen Rooftop is the grown-up version — daily 3 to 6 with $7 Old Fashioneds, $9 palomas and $7–9 wine, and a view that's skyline instead of stadium.
5 o'Clock Somewhere at Margaritaville is the loudest and the least precious — daily 4 to 6, tropical cocktails. It's the one that will happily take a group in matching outfits.
Born and Raised in Little Italy runs a happy hour that is rooftop-only, Monday to Friday 3 to 4:30. Ninety minutes, and you have to be upstairs to get it. It's also the most handsome room on this page.
The coast
Birdseye Rooftop in La Jolla is the best-looking of them — 4.6 stars, happy hour Monday to Friday 4 to 6 with $8 beers, $10 wells, $9–10 house wine and $12 cocktails. Jellyfish_ shows which rooftops have already filled, which with eight people is the difference between a table and the rail.
Pacifica Del Mar is the sleeper: oceanview seafood with a rooftop, and the happy hour runs Sunday and Monday all night, then Tuesday to Friday 4 to 6:30. An all-night rooftop happy hour doesn't exist anywhere else in the county.
Ocean View Bar & Grill in Del Mar is a rooftop hotel bar, daily 4:30 to 6:30.
And Mister A's isn't technically a rooftop. It's the twelfth-floor version, and the one people photograph most — Sunday to Thursday 4 to 6:30, Friday and Saturday 5 to 6:30.
Jellyfish_ shows you how many people are at the bars.
The rule that decides the day
Here it is: rooftops do not take large walk-in groups on a Saturday. Six or more means a reservation or a table minimum, and in summer the good ones are booked a week out. The way around it is the happy hour window. A 4PM arrival on a weekday gets a group in where a 9PM Saturday arrival will not, at roughly half the price. If the party has to be Saturday, split into two groups of four and arrive separately. It works far more often than it should.
Build the day around it
A rooftop is an hour and a half, not an evening. The shape that works is brunch, the rooftop at 4, then a floor you can dance on — The Tipsy Crow (three floors, no cover) or Moonshine Flats in East Village. Both absorb a group better than the Gaslamp clubs, which run covers and get strict after 10.
Minimums and reservation policies change constantly here, so treat this as a shortlist rather than a promise. The one thing I could never tell from the sidewalk was whether the roof was already full — which is exactly what you want to know before you move eight people. That's what we built Jellyfish_ for. People check in while they're out, and that's what updates it. It's free, and you're early.
