We crossed the deals with the crowds
We track happy hours across San Diego, and we model how full each neighborhood typically gets, hour by hour. Putting the two together turns up something that isn't obvious from either one alone.
Happy hour ends, almost everywhere, at the exact hour the neighborhood fills up.
That's not generosity with a cutoff — it's pricing. Bars discount the hours they can't fill on reputation, and stop the moment they can. Which means "when is it cheap" and "when can I get a seat" are the same question, with the same answer, and most people ask it two hours too late.
Here's how each neighborhood actually behaves. All figures are typical occupancy averaged across the venues we track there.
Gaslamp Quarter: no overlap at all
Typical: 64% at 4PM → 81% at 6PM → 87% peak at 8PM. Happy hours end at 5, 6, or 6:30.
The worst ratio in the city: the deals expire exactly as the room becomes standing-room. Whiskey Girl (Mon–Fri 3–7PM, $7 drafts/wells/house wine) is the one real exception — four hours, starting at 3PM when it's still calm. Gaslamp Tavern is the only daily one (3–6PM). Watch the fine print: Knotty Barrel's 4–6PM deal is off on event days, and downtown has a lot of event days.
Hillcrest: four hours of overlap — the best in San Diego
Typical: 32% at 4PM → 53% at 6PM → doesn't hit 80% until 10PM, the latest of any neighborhood we track — every other one has peaked and started emptying by then.
And the happy hours run 2–6PM. Urban MO's does $3 wells 2–6PM. Baja Betty's runs Papi Hour daily 2–6PM at $6.75 margaritas. Gossip Grill is daily 2–6PM on drink tokens. Longest deals in the city, emptiest rooms while they run. If you want cheap and a table, this is the answer and there isn't a close second.
Pacific Beach: wide windows, early start
Typical: 56% at 4PM → 74% at 6PM → 86% peak at 8PM.
Mavericks Beach Club is half off all drinks 2–7PM — opening before the climb, closing right as PB crosses 80%. 710 Beach Club does $7.10 wells and beers from open to 8PM, the only PB deal still alive at peak. Waterbar has $9.50 half-dozen oysters 3–5PM, entirely in the calm.

Ocean Beach: fills early, stays full
Typical: 60% at 4PM → 77% at 6PM → 84% at 7PM → 88% peak at 9PM. OB starts busier than anywhere and holds it longest — still 84% at 10PM when the Gaslamp has dropped to 74%.
The Sunshine Company does half-price beer pitchers daily 5–6PM. Wonderland Ocean Pub runs Mon–Fri 3–5PM, $5 drafts and $10 cocktails, looking at the water — and 3–5PM is the only genuinely calm stretch OB has. Raglan Public House goes 3–6PM with $6 drafts and $10 craft cocktails.
North Park: the longest runway
Typical: 28% at 4PM → 63% at 6PM → 82% peak at 9PM. That 4PM number is the lowest in our data — North Park is genuinely empty in the late afternoon.
Seven Grand has the best structural deal in the city: daily 4–8PM, $6 draughts and select whiskey, $8 classic cocktails. Four hours, every day, and it spans the neighborhood's entire climb from 28% to 81%. You can start in an empty whiskey bar and still be inside the deal when it's full. True North Tavern runs Mon–Fri 3–7PM with $4 margaritas. Encontro North Park does $7 tapas 2:30–5PM.
Little Italy: short and sharp
Ironside Fish & Oyster runs Mon–Fri 3–5PM — $1 oysters, $7 craft beer, $9 cocktails. Craft & Commerce is Mon–Thu 4–5PM and Fri 3–5PM, $8 cocktails and $3.99 sliders. One-hour weeknight windows. Little Italy doesn't need to discount much, and it shows.
La Jolla: where it changes what you can afford
Typical: 46% at 5PM → 64% at 6PM → 85% peak at 8PM.
This is the neighborhood where happy hour does the most work, because the gap between the discounted and undiscounted menu is the widest. George's at the Cove does half off beers and wines by the glass Mon–Fri 2–6PM. The Marine Room — the one where waves hit the windows — runs Mon–Fri 4–6PM, $9 wine and $14 bar apps, at a fraction of what dinner there costs. Herringbone is daily 4–6PM, $1 oysters and $8 cocktails.
Bankers Hill and beyond
Bankers Hill is a late starter — typically 12% at 5PM, 37% at 6PM, not peaking until 8PM. Which makes Cucina Urbana's $40 pizza-and-a-bottle (Mon–Fri 4–6PM, at the bar) arguably the best-value happy hour in San Diego: dinner for two, at a discount, in a room that's barely started. Trust runs daily 5–6PM, $6 drafts and $10 cocktails. Over in Normal Heights, Sycamore Den does 50% off craft cocktails and beer, Mon–Thu 5–7PM and Fri–Sun 2–7PM.
The rule
Go two hours earlier than you were going to. In every neighborhood in this guide except Hillcrest, the happy hour ends within an hour of the room hitting 80% — so arriving "for happy hour" at 6PM means arriving for neither the price nor the space.
And if you want both, with room to spare: Hillcrest at 4PM, or North Park at 4PM with Seven Grand's four-hour window ahead of you. Those are the two genuine gaps in the city, and they're gaps because most people don't know the curve.
