A dive bar isn't a decor choice. It's a price.
San Diego has plenty of bars that look like dives and charge $16 for a cocktail. Exposed brick, a neon sign somebody bought on purpose, a bartender in a flannel. That's a costume. A dive is where the drink actually costs what a dive drink should, with the window written down.
The half-price windows
The Double Deuce in the Gaslamp runs the best deal downtown and almost nobody mentions it: Tuesday to Thursday from open until 9PM, Friday to Sunday until 8PM, half off drinks. Most of the evening, seven days a week, four blocks from bars charging $18 a cocktail. I've told people who are downtown every weekend and they look at me like I'm making it up.
Tavern at the Beach in Pacific Beach does Monday to Friday 3 to 8 — half off all drinks. Five hours. That isn't a happy hour, that's a shift.
Redwing Bar & Grill in North Park goes daily 3 to 6 with $1.50 domestic drafts, $3 PBR and $5 domestic bottles — the lowest single price on this page.
Stout Public House downtown runs daily 4 to 8 at $3 bottled beer and $4 wells and bloody marys. Four hours is the longest window in the core.
Pecs Bar in North Park does daily 12 to 7 — seven hours — at $4 domestic beers and $5 wells. Seven hours. Starting at noon. Every day.
The cheap by default ones
These don't need a window, because the standing price is already low. They're also small, which is the catch. Jellyfish_ shows which of these rooms has a seat right now, which for a bar with twelve stools is the whole question.
Rocky's Crown Pub in Pacific Beach is cash only, 4.6 stars, a short beer list and the best burger on that stretch. Open Bar, also PB, runs rotating specials daily and all day — Monday is $3.25 32oz drafts.
The Silver Fox Lounge does $7 well margaritas and $3 you-call-its on wells. Triple Crown Pub in North Park runs Monday to Friday 3 to 7 and Saturday 12 to 7 with $1 off all pints and $2 off all pitchers.
Lucy's Tavern in Ocean Beach is cash-only with a pool table, foosball and shuffleboard, and a happy hour that starts at 8AM. I'm not telling you to be there at 8AM. I'm telling you the door is open. The Tilted Stick nearby has free pool and a $10 burger-and-beer.
Moonshine Flats in East Village prices like a dive despite being a country bar with a real dance floor: weekdays 3 to 7, $6 wells, $12 domestic pitchers.
Jellyfish_ shows you how many people are at the bars.
How to actually drink cheap here
- Bring cash. Rocky's, Lucy's and The Lancers are cash-only, and several others simply move faster that way.
- The windows are early. Almost every deal here ends between 6 and 9PM. The expensive hours and the dive hours barely overlap, which is the whole opportunity.
- Pitchers over rounds. Triple Crown's $2 off and Moonshine's $12 domestics are the cheapest way to drink in a group in this city.
One more thing
Dive prices move less than cocktail-bar prices, but windows get trimmed when a place gets busy — a half-price-till-9 can quietly become half-price-till-7. Nobody announces it. The sign by the register just changes.
Treat this as a shortlist rather than a promise. I live here and I drink at most of these, and the thing I could never tell from the sidewalk was whether the small ones were already full. So we built the app. It's free, it's new, and you're early — people check in while they're out, and that's what updates it. Check in tonight and the next person gets a straight answer too.
