Dive Bars With Live Music in San Diego

James Williamson · Oct 14, 2026

The best live music in San Diego isn't on a ticket page.

It's in a handful of small rooms where a band plays for the price of a drink. The city has more of those than its reputation suggests.

The rooms built around a stage

Brick By Brick in Old Town is the one that matters most — metal, punk and hard rock, a big stage, a patio, 4.6 stars across 1,000+ reviews. It has been the home of heavy music in this city for decades.

The Tower Bar dates to 1932 and books live punk and rock under a genuinely historic room. 4.6 stars.

Til-Two Club runs live music, karaoke and a jukebox. A proper dive that treats the stage seriously.

Black Cat Bar in North Park does live music, pool tables and a jukebox at 4.5 stars.

Soda Bar in North Park is the city's best small indie room, with a $5 signature cocktail happy hour from 7 to 9 — unusual in that it runs into the evening instead of ending at 6.

Dirk's Nite Club books bands, karaoke and dancing, plus beer pong and pool tournaments.

The bars where the music is the side dish

Patricks Gaslamp Pub is the live blues room downtown — $1 off all draft beers, a small stage, and the most consistent live music in the Gaslamp that isn't ticketed. In a room that size, the difference between a gig and an audience of nine is whether anybody else turned up. Jellyfish_ tells you if they did — people check in while they're out, and that's what updates it.

The Kraken in Encinitas is a beachside dive with live music and pool tables.

Northside Tavern in Ocean Beach runs live music next to pool tables and a dog-friendly patio. Happy hour is Monday and Wednesday to Friday 4 to 7 at $4.50 wells.

Prohibition Lounge downtown is the elegant end of this — a basement with no sign and live jazz most nights. It fills early and quietly. Nobody tells you it's full. You just arrive and it is.

Seven Grand in North Park puts live music next to a hundred-plus whiskeys and a daily 4-to-8 happy hour.

How to land on the good night

One more thing

Live music schedules change weekly. Rooms drop a night or add one without telling anybody.

So treat this as a shortlist, not a promise. The booking I can't help with — that one lives on the venue's calendar. The room I can. For the walk-in places, whether the small ones have already filled is the whole question, and standing outside never once told me the answer. That's the part we built. It's free, and you're here early.

Which of these is actually busy tonight?

A list tells you where to go. It can't tell you which of these is packed at 10:40 on a Friday, or which one already emptied out — that's the part Jellyfish_ is built for.

Jellyfish is live on the App Store — free, and built in San Diego.
