San Diego is a patio city. That makes it a dog city by accident.
One thing before the list. California lets dogs on an outdoor patio at the owner's discretion, so "has a patio" and "welcomes dogs" are two different sentences. The first group below have told people they're dog-friendly. The second group have the patio. Call ahead.
The ones that say so
Quartyard in East Village is the best answer in the city and it isn't close: an outdoor container park with a bar, food, live music and an actual dog park inside it. 4.6 stars. You are not managing your dog here. Your dog is having a better time than you are.
Northside Tavern in Ocean Beach has a dog-friendly patio, pool tables and live music, plus happy hour Monday and Wednesday to Friday 4 to 7 at $4.50 wells.
Belching Beaver Brewery in North Park is a dog-friendly tasting room. Industrial-chic, housemade beer, $5 pints on Tuesdays. That's where Tuesday goes.
Bayside Landing in Pacific Beach does a gastropub menu and a dog-friendly patio, Monday to Friday 3 to 6 at $3 off apps, $2 off taps and cocktails.
Encontro North Park is pet-friendly, with happy-hour specials Monday to Friday 2:30 to 5.
Not a bar, but worth knowing: Cody's La Jolla is famous for being pet-friendly, with ocean views, crab cakes Benedict, and the best dog brunch in the county. Jellyfish_ shows you how full the patio is before you put the dog in the car, which is worth more here than anywhere.
The patios where it usually works
These have the outdoor space and the loose setup. Most San Diego patios will take a well-behaved dog. None of these have published a policy, so the courteous move is a phone call.
Station Tavern in South Park has a big patio and the right crowd. Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Liberty Station is gardens, not a dining room, and there's room for everyone. Eppig's Waterfront Biergarten in Point Loma is open-air, on the water. Hillcrest Brewing and Original 40 both run patios in neighborhoods you can walk.
Wonderland Ocean Pub and South Beach Bar & Grille in Ocean Beach both face the water with outdoor seating, in the neighborhood most relaxed about dogs in the whole county.
Jellyfish_ shows you how many people are at the bars.
How to not have a bad time
- Go early. A patio at 4PM is a different room than the same patio at 9. North Park is usually full by 7PM, Pacific Beach full.
- Breweries beat bars. Taprooms are usually bigger, usually outdoors, and almost always more relaxed about it than a cocktail room.
- Ocean Beach is the default. If you don't feel like planning, go there.
One last thing
Policies move with management, and with how busy the patio already is. A place that's fine on a Tuesday can say no on a Saturday.
So treat this as a shortlist, not a promise. Call ahead for anything in the second group. And if you want to know which patio has room before you load the dog into the car, that's what we built the app for. It's free, and what you're looking at is people checking in while they're out.
