The deal ends when the room fills
The Gaslamp Quarter has more bars per block than anywhere in San Diego and nearly all of them run a happy hour. Almost all of those end between 5 and 7PM. That looks like a coincidence until you lay it over how the neighborhood actually fills up.
Averaged across the Gaslamp venues we track, a typical evening runs busy at 4PM, busy at 5PM, full at 6PM, and peaks around packed at 8PM.
So the discounts stop at the exact hour the neighborhood goes standing-room. Nobody's being generous between 3 and 6. They're buying your company during the only hours they aren't already full, and once the room fills on its own the deal has done its job.
Which leaves almost no overlap between cheap and comfortable. Roughly 3–6PM. Same window for both. After that you get neither.
The widest window: Whiskey Girl
Whiskey Girl runs Monday–Friday 3–7PM — $7 drafts, wells and house wine, plus half off select apps. Four hours where two is the standard around here. The front end of it (3PM, ~half full typical) is the calmest hour you'll find inside a Gaslamp deal. If you remember one thing from this post, remember this window.
The only one that runs every day: Gaslamp Tavern
Gaslamp Tavern goes daily 3–6PM: $2 off drafts, wine and cocktails, $6 wells, $2 shareables. Nearly every other happy hour here is Monday–Friday, which is a strange thing to standardize on when the Gaslamp's whole economy is weekend visitors. On a Saturday at 4PM, this is a very short list.
The rooftop tax: Altitude Sky Lounge
Altitude Sky Lounge is Monday–Friday 5–7PM — $5 domestic drafts, $7 premium well cocktails, on a roof over Petco Park. Note where that window sits: the steepest part of the curve. You pay less, and you do it while the room climbs toward its peak. That's the rooftop tax. It's mostly fair.

Read the parenthetical: Knotty Barrel
Knotty Barrel is Monday–Friday 4–6PM — $2 off drafts, wells and apps, plus an $8.50 smashburger — on non-event days. That parenthetical does a lot of work. Downtown has a Padres homestand, a convention or a festival more weeks than it doesn't, and the deal is off for all of them. Worth checking rather than assuming. Jellyfish_ shows how full the room already is, so you can tell whether the discount is worth the company it comes with.
The weekend window: Rustic Root
Rustic Root runs Monday–Friday 5–6:30PM and Saturday–Sunday 3–5PM — half off drafts, $6 wells, $9 cocktails. The weekday window is late and short. The weekend one is the prize: 3–5PM on a Saturday is the last stretch before the curve goes vertical.
Six people, no negotiation: Nason's Beer Hall
Nason's Beer Hall is Monday–Friday 3–5PM — $5 select drafts, $6 house wine, $7 well cocktails. Early and tight. But it's a beer hall, so you can seat six people without a negotiation, and at 5PM in the Gaslamp that's worth more than a dollar off a pint.
What to actually do
Arrive at 3 or 4, not 6. At 4PM you're in a room that's typically busy with every deal in this post still running. At 6PM the deals are ending and the room is full. The Gaslamp is priced and packed on the same clock, so there's no version of this where showing up later goes well.
Want the energy, come at 8PM and pay for it. Want a drink and a chair, come at 4. The mistake is showing up at 6:30 expecting either.
I drink down here more than I should, and the thing I could never tell from outside the door was whether the room was already full. That's the whole reason the app exists. It's free, it's new, and you're early — people check in while they're out, and that's what updates it.
