The deal ends when the room fills
The Gaslamp Quarter has more bars per block than anywhere in San Diego and nearly all of them run a happy hour. Almost all of those end between 5 and 7PM. That looks like a coincidence until you overlay it on how the neighborhood actually fills up.
Averaged across the Gaslamp venues we track, a typical evening runs 64% full at 4PM, 73% at 5PM, 81% at 6PM, and peaks around 87% at 8PM.
So: the discounts end at the precise hour the neighborhood becomes standing-room. Bars aren't being generous between 3 and 6 — they're buying your company during the only hours they aren't already full. Once the room fills on its own, the deal has done its job and it stops.
Which means the Gaslamp gives you almost no overlap between "cheap" and "comfortable." That window is roughly 3–6PM, it's the same window for both, and after it you get neither.
The widest window: Whiskey Girl
Whiskey Girl runs Monday–Friday 3–7PM — $7 drafts, wells and house wine, plus half off select apps. Four hours is unusually generous here, where two is standard, and the front end of it (3PM, ~58% typical) is the calmest hour you'll find inside a Gaslamp deal. If you only remember one thing from this post, remember this window.
The only daily one: Gaslamp Tavern
Gaslamp Tavern goes daily 3–6PM: $2 off drafts, wine and cocktails, $6 wells, $2 shareables. Nearly every other happy hour here is Monday–Friday — which is a strange thing to standardize on, given the Gaslamp's entire economy is weekend visitors. On a Saturday at 4PM, this is a very short list.
The rooftop: Altitude Sky Lounge
Altitude Sky Lounge is Monday–Friday 5–7PM — $5 domestic drafts, $7 premium well cocktails, on a roof over Petco Park. Note the window sits at the 73%→86% stretch of the curve: you're paying less, but you're doing it in the fullest part of the evening. That's the rooftop tax and it's mostly fair.
The one that gets people: Knotty Barrel
Knotty Barrel is Monday–Friday 4–6PM — $2 off drafts, wells and apps, plus an $8.50 smashburger — on non-event days. That parenthetical does a lot of work. Downtown has a Padres homestand, a convention, or a festival more weeks than it doesn't, and the deal is off for all of them. Worth checking rather than assuming.
Weekend afternoons: Rustic Root
Rustic Root runs Monday–Friday 5–6:30PM and Saturday–Sunday 3–5PM — half off drafts, $6 wells, $9 cocktails. The weekday window is late and short. The weekend one is the real prize: 3–5PM on a Saturday is the last stretch before the curve goes vertical.
For groups: Nason's Beer Hall
Nason's Beer Hall is Monday–Friday 3–5PM — $5 select drafts, $6 house wine, $7 well cocktails. Early and tight, but it's a beer hall: you can seat six people without a negotiation, which at 5PM in the Gaslamp is worth more than a dollar off a pint.
What to actually do
Arrive at 3 or 4, not 6. At 4PM you're in a room that's typically 64% full with every deal in this post still running. At 6PM the deals are ending and you're at 81%. There is no version of the Gaslamp where showing up later goes well — the neighborhood is priced and packed on the same clock.
If you want the Gaslamp's energy, come at 8PM and pay for it. If you want a drink and a chair, come at 4. The mistake is arriving at 6:30 expecting either.
