A Halloween Bar Crawl in San Diego That Works on Foot

James Williamson · Oct 12, 2026

Halloween 2026 lands on a Saturday. Best possible outcome, and the exact reason a crawl needs a plan this year.

San Diego sells a few ticketed Halloween crawls. This is the other version — a route you walk yourself, free, through bars that already sit next to each other.

Four rules. Three stops, not six — with a costume and a door line at each one, three is the honest number. One neighborhood, not "downtown." Eat first. And start at 7, not 9. That last one matters most: the Gaslamp is usually full by 10PM on an ordinary night, and Halloween on a Saturday is not ordinary.

The Gaslamp route

Everything here sits a few minutes from Fifth and Market.

7:00 — Werewolf. Best all-rounder in the core, 4.6 stars over 3,000+ reviews, big windows, a good view of the costumes arriving.

8:30 — Gaslamp Tavern or The Field Irish Pub. Two minutes away. The Field is the one that feels like an actual pub instead of a room dressed as one.

10:00 — The Tipsy Crow. Three floors: basement dance floor, main bar, upstairs. You can keep the crawl moving without leaving the building.

Want a club to finish? Parq, Onyx Room and SideBar sit inside the same five blocks. Cover and a line on Halloween, guaranteed. The app shows which of the five is already full at the moment you're deciding.

Two calmer routes

East Village runs filling up by 10PM against the Gaslamp's full — same walk from the trolley, nineteen points calmer. Start at Neighborhood around 7 and eat there, which gets rule three out of the way. Knotty Barrel at 8:30, two minutes away, 4.5 stars, and the kind of room where a costume gets a compliment rather than a shove. counterpoint at 10, rated 4.7 and built to be good late. Still going? KINDRED runs happy hour every hour it's open, $5 wells — the only place downtown where the late round is also the cheap one.

Pacific Beach is the loud version, and Garnet Avenue is literally a straight line, which does half the work for you. Eat at Bare Back Grill around 6:30 (daily 4 to 7, $2 off apps and drafts). The Grass Skirt at 8 — a tiki speakeasy behind a poke shop, and the room that'll have a line by 9. Finish at Moonshine Beach for the dance floor, or Rocky's Crown Pub for the local version: cash, burgers, no nonsense. PB is packed by 8PM, so all of it wants to happen early.

Jellyfish_ shows you how many people are at the bars.

Sort these before Saturday

Book the ride both ways — Halloween on a Saturday is one of the worst surge nights of the year here. Wear shoes you can actually walk in. And have a backup for every stop, so a closed door costs you a block rather than the night.

One last thing

What a route can't tell you is which room is full at the moment you're standing on the corner deciding. I drink at most of these and I still couldn't answer that, which is why we built Jellyfish_ — every San Diego bar on one map, quiet to packed, updated through the night as people check in while they're out. It's free, and you're early.

Covers and hours change right up to Halloween. Treat these as a shortlist rather than a promise.

Which of these is actually busy tonight?

A list tells you where to go. It can't tell you which of these is packed at 10:40 on a Friday, or which one already emptied out — that's the part Jellyfish_ is built for.

Jellyfish is live on the App Store — free, and built in San Diego.
