18 San Diego bars run an oyster happy hour. The price runs from $1 to $14 apiece.
That spread isn't about quality. It's about whether the oyster is the promotion or the garnish.
The ones that charge a dollar
Four places put them at a dollar. None of them are dive bars.
Ironside Fish & Oyster in Little Italy is the one to know. Monday to Friday 3 to 5: $1 oysters, $7 craft beer, $8 house wine, $9 cocktails. It's a serious oyster room — best-reviewed on this list by a distance at 5,000+ reviews — and a dollar oyster in a room that nice is the best value in San Diego happy hour. Two hours only, and it fills. Jellyfish_ shows you whether it already has, so 4:45 isn't a surprise.
JRDN in Pacific Beach matches it — same $1 price, 3 to 5, on the boardwalk.
Beeside Balcony runs $1 oysters daily 3 to 6 at both its Del Mar and La Jolla rooms. Daily, three hours wide. The most forgiving window on the page.
HIVE Bar & Karaoke in Convoy does $1 oysters Thursday to Saturday, with happy hour 5 to 7 and again 11PM to 1AM. A late-night dollar oyster is a strange and excellent thing.
$1.50 to $3 is the sweet spot
Barely more money. Noticeably better rooms, longer windows.
Tom Ham's Lighthouse on Harbor Island: 3 to 6, bar area only, $1.50 oysters, $2 off craft cocktails, select beers $3 — with the downtown skyline sitting across the water. If you take one pick off this page, take this one.
Kettner Exchange in Little Italy does $1.50 from 5 to 7. Brigantine Coronado runs $1.50 Sunday to Friday 3 to 6, and all day Monday. Piedra Santa downtown does $1.50 Sunday to Thursday. Cannonball in Mission Beach does $2 over the sand. Stake Chophouse in Coronado runs $3 daily — a chophouse selling three-dollar oysters every day of the week is an anomaly worth using.
Further up: Waterbar in PB does a half dozen for $9.50, Deckman's in North Park does $12 a dozen Tuesday to Saturday, and Herb & Wood does $6 roasted oysters with 50% off bubbles in a single 5-to-6 hour.

How to not miss it
- Go early in the window. The kitchen shucks to a count, so oyster happy hours run out before the clock does. A 3-to-5 window means 3, not 4:45.
- Ask about the bar area. Tom Ham's and several others run the deal at the bar only. Better view from a table, better price at the bar.
- Most are weekday-only. Of the 18, only a handful reach the weekend — Deckman's runs Tuesday to Saturday, HIVE Thursday to Saturday, and the Beeside rooms, Stake and Lighthouse run daily.
Little Italy is the crawl
It's the oyster neighborhood. Ironside, Kettner Exchange and Herb & Wood sit within a few blocks of each other, which makes a real oyster crawl possible — Ironside at 3, Kettner at 5. Little Italy is usually packed by 8PM, so the early windows are also the comfortable ones.
Prices and windows move, and seafood specials move faster than most, so treat this as a shortlist. I live here and I eat at most of these. The thing I could never tell from the sidewalk was whether the small good ones were already full by the time I got there. So we built Jellyfish_. It's free, it's new, and you're early — people check in while they're out, and that's what updates it.
