Sunday is the second-thinnest happy hour day in San Diego. Of the 393 bars we track with a published happy hour, 167 run one on a Sunday — more than Saturday's 152, fewer than any weekday. That sounds like bad news. It isn't.
The bars that keep Sunday tend to run it wide, run it early, and sit in the places you actually want to be on a Sunday afternoon. Saturday can't say that.
Sunday belongs to the coast
Look at which rooms hold onto a Sunday happy hour and the pattern shows up fast: coastal restaurants with real bars, long afternoon windows. Sunday is their day. The discount stays.
Brigantine Seafood & Oyster Bar does this best, and three of them are worth knowing. Coronado runs Sunday to Friday 2 to 5 — a three-hour window starting at 2 is the widest early slot in the city — with $1.50 oysters and $3.25 fish tacos. Del Mar does Sunday 3 to 6 with $7 oysters. Point Loma keeps Sunday in the same rotation.
Bluewater Boathouse in Coronado is Sunday to Thursday 3 to 6: $6 beer, $9 cocktails, $10 fish tacos. If you only do one Coronado Sunday, do this one. The view handles most of the work.
Vigilucci's in Carlsbad publishes the longest happy hour we have on file anywhere: 11:30AM to 6PM, daily, bar area only. On a Sunday that's six and a half hours.
Humphreys Half Moon Inn in Point Loma runs daily 4 to 6, out on the marina.
Sunday counts as a weekday
A large number of San Diego bars run Sunday to Thursday, not Monday to Friday. Sunday gets grouped in with the weekdays, which means you often get the full weekday deal. The deal gets published. Whether anybody's in there doesn't — that part is Jellyfish_, and on a Sunday afternoon the difference between a good room and an empty one is wider than usual. People check in while they're out, and that's what updates it.
Hard Rock Hotel downtown, Sunday to Thursday 4 to 6: $5 drafts, $8 house wine, $9 margarita. Mister A's, Sunday to Thursday 4 to 6:30 — it shrinks to 5 to 6:30 on Friday and Saturday, so Sunday is both the better deal and the better room. Meze Greek Fusion, Sunday to Friday 3 to 6. Piedra Santa, Sunday to Thursday with $1.50 oysters.
Lazy Dog in Mission Valley runs a second window Sunday to Thursday, 9PM to midnight. A late Sunday happy hour barely exists in this city. That one does.
And Cafe Coyote in Old Town — the most-reviewed happy hour in San Diego — runs Sunday to Friday, 4 to 8. Four hours, $3.75 drafts, $2 cantina tacos.
Jellyfish_ shows you how many people are at the bars.
Go at 3, not 6
Sunday in San Diego starts early and quits early. The coastal rooms fill from about 2PM, and the afternoon genuinely is the peak — not the warm-up for it. By 10PM much of the city has gone quiet. East Village is filling up by 10PM, which on a Friday would be a slow night and on a Sunday is just what Sunday looks like.
So treat the happy hour as the main event. Sit on the water if you can.
Before you walk over
If the plan has more than one stop, check which room has anyone in it before you go. On a Sunday an empty bar is a real risk. Knowing which places are busy is exactly what we built Jellyfish_ for, and it's free — you're early, so tell whoever you're going with. Sunday windows move more than most, so treat this as a shortlist rather than a promise.
