We track 393 bars in San Diego with a published happy hour. How many of them are running one today depends on which day you're reading this:
| Day | Bars with a happy hour |
|---|---|
| Monday | 321 |
| Tuesday | 349 |
| Wednesday | 348 |
| Thursday | 355 |
| Friday | 320 |
| Saturday | 152 |
| Sunday | 167 |
That table is the most useful thing to know about happy hour in this city. Thursday is the peak. Saturday has less than half as many options. So if you've ever gone looking for a happy hour on a weekend and come up empty, you weren't unlucky — you were hunting in the thinnest part of the week.
What each day is good for
Monday is the generous day. 321 bars, and a handful skip the window entirely and run it all day — Brigantine Point Loma, Duke's La Jolla, Pacifica Del Mar, Karina's Cantina. Quiet rooms, best deals, a seat anywhere.
Tuesday is tacos and pints. Second-biggest day, and the day bars pick one item and go hard at it — $5 Pint Tuesdays at Belching Beaver Oceanside, half-price tacos at Puesto.
Wednesday is wine. Wine Wednesday at The Bar at Moniker General runs all day with $25 house bottles. Isola in Little Italy does 50% off a select bottle.
Thursday is the peak at 355 bars — the city behaving like a weekend without the weekend prices. Widest choice you'll get.
Friday drops to 320 and the windows start shortening. Be in by 5.
Saturday is the hard one at 152. The ones left standing are the all-week operators: La Puerta daily 3 to 5, Gossip Grill daily 2 to 6, KINDRED all open hours.
Sunday comes back to 167 and skews coastal. The pattern to know: plenty of bars run Sunday to Thursday rather than Monday to Friday, so Sunday often gets the full weekday deal. Jellyfish_ shows which of them is running one right now, and how full the room already is.
The windows worth memorizing
Almost every happy hour here starts between 2PM and 5PM and ends between 5PM and 7PM. The most common single window in San Diego is 3 to 6.
A few break the rule in your favor. Vigilucci's, Carlsbad runs 11:30AM to 6PM daily. Cafe Coyote, Old Town does Sunday to Friday 4 to 8. Georges at the Cove goes 2 to 6. Tavern at the Beach in PB runs 3 to 8 at half off all drinks.
And the late ones matter more than they look. Lazy Dog does 9PM to midnight Sunday to Thursday. Dave & Buster's goes 10PM to close. A late happy hour is rare here, and it's the difference between a second round and going home.
Jellyfish_ shows you how many people are at the bars.
Do it backwards
Most people pick the bar first, then find out the window closed an hour ago.
Do it the other way. Pick the day's window, then a neighborhood with enough rooms inside a short walk that a wrong guess is recoverable, then the bar. Downtown, North Park, Little Italy and Pacific Beach all pass that test.
The part a list can't do
A list can't tell you which of those rooms has anybody in it right now. Pacific Beach is usually packed by 8PM, Little Italy packed, North Park full — but those are averages, and on any given night half are packed and half are empty.
Knowing which half before you leave is what we built the app for — people check in while they're out, and that's what updates it. Happy hours move constantly too, so check the day before you commit to a drive.
