La Jolla has the best views in San Diego and it charges you for looking at them.
Almost every one of these rooms runs a happy hour, though. Inside that window you're paying ordinary prices in an extraordinary room.
The ones on the water
Georges at the Cove is the one. Monday to Friday 2 to 6 — four hours — half off beers and wines by the glass, on a terrace that looks straight down into the cove. It's the best price-to-view ratio in San Diego, and most people don't know the happy hour exists.
Duke's La Jolla sits directly over the water and runs Aloha Hour Monday 3PM to close, then Tuesday to Friday 3 to 6. An all-afternoon Monday on that balcony is an unreasonable thing to be allowed to do. Take the Monday.
Cove House is the same stretch of coast, Monday to Friday 4 to 6, at $6 beer and wine and $7 sangria.
Birdseye Rooftop is the rooftop answer — 4.6 stars, Monday to Friday 4 to 6, $8 beers, $10 wells, $9–10 house wine and $12 cocktails. You're buying altitude.
The rooms with no view
Some of the best drinking in La Jolla faces a wall. Worth knowing which is which before you book. Jellyfish_ tells you which of them is busy right now — people check in while they're out, and that's what updates it.
Raised by Wolves is the serious one: a bottle shop that opens through a revolving fireplace into a hidden bar, 4.5 stars across 1,897 reviews — the most-reviewed proper cocktail room on this page.
NINE-TEN runs Monday to Friday 3:30 to 6:30 with $6 bottled beer, $8 martinis and $11–14 cocktails. Marisi does a Wednesday 5-to-9 aperitivo hour. We Olive & Wine Bar is 4.7 with Monday to Friday 3:30 to 6:30, $3 off wines and $3 off a cheese plate.
AleSmith is the beer answer at 4.7, and the tours are free. Public House runs Monday to Friday 3 to 6 at $2 off craft beers and wine, and Hennessey's does tiered $6/$7/$8 drinks 4 to 7.
Jellyfish_ shows you how many people are at the bars.
Two things before you drive up
- The window and the sunset rarely line up. Most happy hours here end at 6 or 6:30, and for much of the year the sun sets later than that. Get there at 4, drink at happy hour prices, then hold the table through sunset on one full-price round. Call that round the cover charge.
- Ask for the bar. Several of the view rooms run the deal in the bar or lounge only. The better table is also the more expensive one.
When to go
La Jolla is an afternoon neighborhood. Busy and bright from about 2PM, and it winds down early compared with downtown. That's the point, if you want to hear the person across the table.
Prices and windows move with the season here more than anywhere else in the county, so treat this as a shortlist and not a promise. What a list can't tell you is whether the terrace has a free table before you drive up there. That's what we built Jellyfish_ for. It's free, and you're early to it.
