"Ocean view" is the most abused phrase in San Diego hospitality. Half the rooms claiming it mean you can see a wedge of blue between two buildings if you stand near the restroom. This list holds a higher bar: water you can actually watch, from a seat you'd choose anyway.
The real thing, north to south
Georges at the Cove — La Jolla. The ocean-view level above the Cove is the county's benchmark: the horizon does the entertaining, and the room is good enough that it doesn't coast on it. Dressier than the rest of this list; treat it as the occasion pick.
JRDN Restaurant — Pacific Beach. Floor-to-ceiling boardwalk frontage at Tower23. The polish is hotel-modern, but the view is pure PB: surfers, cruisers, and the whole neighborhood on parade. Weekday afternoons here are criminally easy to get.
Lahaina Beach House — Pacific Beach. The opposite end of the polish spectrum and prouder of it: sand at your feet, a beer in a plastic cup, the ocean twenty steps away. Pacific Beach typically builds all afternoon toward its evening peak — the 3 PM seat is the whole move.
Wonderland Ocean Pub — Ocean Beach. The wall of windows over the water is the neighborhood's shared living room, and the sunset crush proves it. Come well before golden hour or after dark, when the room exhales.
South Beach Bar & Grille — the OB pier-side classic with the fish tacos everyone tells you about, view included at no markup.
Sun Deck — Coronado. The Hotel Del's beachfront bar, where the view comes with the island's slower clock. Coronado typically peaks at a genteel 8 PM; nothing here rewards hurrying.
The harbor is a view too
Shelter Island's marina-front rooms watch masts instead of surf, and Point Loma's late, gentle curve — typically 30% at 5 PM, peaking around 9 — means the water-view seat is actually gettable at the hour the light is best. The bay side of the county is the ocean view without the ocean crowd.
How to actually get the seat
The view seats turn over on the sun's schedule, not the bar's. An hour before sunset, every one of these rooms tightens; twenty minutes after, they all breathe. Go early for the seat, or go after dark for the room — the in-between is where the waiting lives.
