PB runs on a different clock — and the numbers show it
Downtown happy hours are built around people leaving offices, so they're short and they die at 6. Pacific Beach is built around people leaving the beach, which is a looser idea, and the deals stretch accordingly.
The occupancy curve backs it up. Across the PB venues we track, a typical day averages 56% at 4PM, 64% at 5PM, 74% at 6PM, 83% at 7PM, and peaks around 86% at 8PM.
The useful part isn't the peak — every nightlife neighborhood peaks around 8. It's that PB's best deals start hours before the curve climbs, which downtown's don't. There's real overlap here between cheap and calm, and it's wide enough to plan around.
The one that breaks the format: Mavericks Beach Club
Mavericks Beach Club runs half off all drinks from 2–7PM, then flips to $4 beers, teas and shots from 7–9PM. Seven straight hours of some kind of deal.
Look at where that window sits: it opens well before the neighborhood starts filling and closes at 7PM — right as PB crosses 80%. Whether by design or instinct, it's the most precisely-aimed happy hour in the neighborhood. The first three hours of it are the best value in Pacific Beach, full stop.
The gimmick that works: 710 Beach Club
710 Beach Club does $7.10 wells, bottled and draft beers from open until 8PM, plus 2-for-1 whiskey shots. The price is a pun on the address; the window is the point. Open-to-8PM means there's no wrong time to walk in, and it's the only deal in PB still running when the room hits its 8PM peak.
Half off the good stuff: The Grass Skirt
The Grass Skirt is Tuesday–Friday 5–6PM — 50% off cocktails, tiki shots, beer and wine. One hour, and it lands at the 64%→74% climb. It's a hidden tiki bar with genuinely good cocktails and a steep discount, and you get sixty minutes. Be there at 5:00, not 5:45.
Food-forward: Waterbar
Waterbar runs Monday–Friday 3–5PM — $6 drafts, $8 sushi rolls, $9.50 half-dozen oysters. That window is entirely in the calm half of the curve. Oysters under ten dollars a half-dozen, on the sand, before the crowd arrives, is the most Pacific Beach sentence on this page.
The upscale one: JRDN
JRDN, in Tower23 on the boardwalk, goes Monday–Friday 3–5PM: $7 draft, $9 wine, $10 Tito's martinis, a $14 mango margarita, $1 oysters. It's the nicest room in PB, and 3–5PM is the only time its pricing looks like the rest of the neighborhood's.
Simple: Flamingo Deck
Flamingo Deck is Monday–Friday 3–6PM. Three hours, weekdays, no asterisks.
How to use this
The PB move is to start earlier than feels reasonable. At 4PM the neighborhood is typically 56% full and nearly every deal on this page is live — that's a genuinely pleasant beach afternoon. By 8PM you're at 86% and only 710 is still going.
If you want one hour to build around, take 5PM: The Grass Skirt's 50% off is running, Mavericks is still half off for two more hours, 710 is going, and the room is only around 64%. That's the peak overlap of cheap and calm in Pacific Beach.
