Ocean Beach drinks on a different clock than the rest of San Diego. Bars here are in use at 2pm on a Tuesday, and by the time downtown is getting dressed, a good chunk of OB has already had three beers and walked home. Show up at 10pm on a Saturday and you get the version of the neighborhood that belongs to everyone else.
The bar stretch of Newport Avenue is only a few blocks long, but the rooms on it are genuinely different from one another. Here's how to use them.
The afternoon shift
Daytime drinking is a working institution in OB. These places fill while the sun is still up.
Winstons Beach Club
Happy hour runs daily from 1PM to 9PM, which tells you how this bar sees the world: $1–2 off everything, plus $3 domestic drafts on Monday, $3 Fireball on Tuesday, $3 wells on Sunday. Two blocks from the sand, and the crowd turns over completely as the day goes. Afternoons are mellow and local. Once the bands start it becomes a music venue with a dance floor that people actually use, and the room gets full. Come before 6 for the neighborhood, later for the show.
Sunshine Company Saloon
The second-floor open deck is the whole reason to come, with ocean views up top and pool tables and sports TVs downstairs. Happy hour is daily 5–6PM with half-price beer pitchers — a one-hour window that everybody in OB already knows about, so the deck is at its most competitive right at 5. Get there by 4 if you want a table you can hold onto.
The Tilted Stick Bar & Grill
Snug, cheap, dog-friendly patio. Monday through Friday 4–7PM you get $3 off pitchers and a $10 burger and beer, which is one of the more honest deals on the street. The room is small enough that a group of eight feels like a takeover. Best as a two- or three-person stop where you end up talking to the bartender.
BBQ House Bar & Grill
Steps from the ocean, daily happy hour 4–6PM: $2 off draft and wine, $3 16oz Bud or Coors, $5 margaritas and Long Islands. Ribs, pulled pork, and veggie plates if someone in your group needs one. You're here for a cheap drink and a plate of barbecue on the patio in the late afternoon, not for a cocktail program.
Dirty Birds Ocean Beach
Wings and TVs. Happy hour Monday through Friday 3–6PM runs $5 wells all day, $5 drafts, and half-price wings, which makes it a solid landing spot when you want food to be part of the deal. Patio seating, and it's less of a scene than the beachfront places a block over.
The dives
OB's dive bars are the backbone of drinking here, and each one has a different job.
Pacific Shores Cocktail Lounge
The old underwater-themed lounge, dim in the way old bars are dim, with a look nobody focus-grouped. Traditional cocktails, no reinvention. Monday brings half off whiskey after 10PM, and Tuesday is $7 Espolòn shots all night. This is the room you land in at 11pm when you want to sit down and stop making decisions. The space does not handle a group of ten with any grace.
Lucy's Tavern
Cash-only. Bring cash — people get this wrong constantly and end up walking to an ATM mid-round. Strong pours, pool table, foosball and shuffleboard, and a crowd that skews regular. Weeknights are the sweet spot, when you can get on the shuffleboard without waiting through three groups.
Northside Tavern
A sports bar with shuffleboard and enough TVs for a full Sunday slate. It gets loud, which is a feature during a game and a problem if you came to catch up with someone. Happy hour Monday and Wednesday through Friday 4–7PM: $4.50 wells, $5 Paddy's and Fireball, $1 off pints. Cheap enough that four hours go by without a decision being made.
The Reunion Pub
Inexpensive, small, live music, and only 169 reviews — the one people forget to name and then remember fondly. Good call when you want a night that isn't part of the Newport crawl.
Beer, specifically
Ocean Beach Brewery
Three stories of house-brewed beer with a big rooftop patio. Happy hour Monday through Friday 3–6PM knocks $3 off all draft beers with $5–6 food, which makes the roof a real weekday deal. The catch: a rooftop with an ocean view is not a secret, so on weekend afternoons you'll hover for a spot up top while the ground floor sits half-empty. Take the ground floor, or come on a Tuesday.
Kilowatt Brewing OB Tasting Room
A tasting room, not a bar you settle into for five hours. Small, beer-forward, 4.8 stars from the people who bother to review a tasting room. Use it as a first stop with people who want to talk about what they're drinking, then walk to dinner.
Pizza Port Ocean Beach
Nearly 4,000 reviews and still the most reliable group destination in OB, because nobody objects to pizza and there's always something on tap you haven't had. Long tables, families early, beer drinkers and surfers later. Weekend dinner hour means ordering at the counter and circling for a seat. Go at 4:30 or after 8:30.
Ocean views
Wonderland Ocean Pub
Wall of windows over the water, sports on the TVs, and a full food menu so you can post up. Happy hour Monday through Friday 3–5PM: $5 drafts, $8 house wine, $10 select cocktails. Sunset is the crush — there's a 40-minute stretch where everyone in OB decides they want a window seat. Arrive 45 minutes early, or come after dark, when the view is gone and the room loosens up.
South Beach Bar & Grille
Over 4,000 reviews and still slammed. Big microbrew list, ocean views, seafood-leaning Mexican food. Happy hour lands Thursday through Sunday: $5 pints Thursday, $6 oysters Friday, $4 mimosas Saturday, and there's an $8 Patrón margarita on Tuesday. Weekend afternoons are a zoo with a wait to get upstairs. Weekday lunch is when it feels like a neighborhood bar again.
The Holding Company
Industrial room, rooftop bar with ocean views, live bands, Asian-inspired plates. Happy hour Wednesday through Friday 4–6PM. This is the OB option when you want a night built around music instead of a stool and a TV. Check who's playing first — the energy in the room tracks the band exactly.
OB Surf Lodge
Steps from the beach, mod space, creative American food, beer and wine only, live music. Brunch is the strongest use of it. Come here when you want something more considered than pub grub without walking away from the sand.

When you want a table and a real drink
The 3rd Corner Wine Shop & Bistro
The most grown-up room in OB and the one that surprises visitors: a wine shop and bistro in the same space, with regional small plates and weekend brunch. Happy hour Monday through Saturday 3–5PM gets you $6 drafts, $7 wine of the day, and $2 off cocktails. Come when you're meeting someone you actually want to hear. Worth reserving on a weekend night.
La Doña
Colorful, casual, and built with retractable walls, so on a nice day the patio and dining room become one room. Happy hour Monday and Wednesday through Friday 2:30–5PM with margarita specials, plus a $7 margarita on Taco Tuesday. It's a restaurant with good drinks rather than a bar — plan on eating.
Raglan Public House
Large, modern, New Zealand-themed, organic burgers, and a cocktail list worth ordering from. Happy hour Monday through Friday 3–6PM: $6 select drafts, $6 house wine, $10 featured craft cocktails. The size is the point — this is where six people show up without a plan and still get seated. Weekend brunch draws a line.
Off the main drag
Aquarius Bar & Grille
Open-air, out on the marina, pub food and draft beer with live music. A completely different scene from Newport: more boats, fewer bar crawls. Good move when the strip is at capacity and you want room to breathe.
The Harp
An easygoing Irish sports bar with pub food, taps, a patio, brunch, and occasional live music. Cheap and calm most nights, and you can watch a match without shouting over a bachelorette party.
How to time it
Weekday afternoons are the best drinking in Ocean Beach, full stop. Wednesday through Friday between 3 and 6 is when nearly every happy hour on this list overlaps and the patios fill with people who live here. Saturday night on Newport is fine, but that's the neighborhood hosting rather than the neighborhood itself.
