Comic-Con 2026 lands July 22–26
Preview Night is Wednesday, July 22. The main show runs Thursday, July 23 through Sunday, July 26 at the San Diego Convention Center. Roughly 130,000 people land on a few square blocks, and the Gaslamp Quarter — which starts across the street from the convention center — absorbs most of them.
You don't need help finding a bar that week. You need help finding a seat. So this isn't a list. It's what our data says about how downtown fills up, and what to do with it.
Cheap and comfortable close at the same time
We model typical busyness for the bars we track. Average the Gaslamp together and a normal evening goes like this:
- 4PM. Busy already, but you can still move.
- 5PM. Filling fast.
- 6PM. Effectively full.
- 8PM. Peak.
Now put the happy hours next to that. Gaslamp Tavern ends at 6PM. Nason's Beer Hall ends at 5PM. Knotty Barrel ends at 6PM. Rustic Root ends at 6:30PM.
The deals expire at almost exactly the minute the neighborhood goes full. That is the single most useful fact about drinking in the Gaslamp: cheap and comfortable are the same window, and it shuts at 6PM. Show up at 7 and you've missed both. You're paying full price to stand.
Which room still has space is the part you can't see from the sidewalk. That's what Jellyfish_ is for — people check in while they're out, and that's what updates it. It's free, it's new, and you're early.
And that's a typical Wednesday. Con week runs hotter and starts earlier, because 130,000 people with badges are not on an office schedule. Treat every number above as a floor.
Some happy hours just switch off
Several downtown happy hours are suspended on event days, and Comic-Con is the biggest event of the San Diego year.
Knotty Barrel runs $2 off drafts, wells and apps plus an $8.50 smashburger, Monday–Friday 4–6PM — on non-event days. Comic-Con week is exactly when it doesn't run. Bub's at the Ballpark in East Village is the same story: $1 off drafts, $5 wells, half-price baskets 3–5PM, non-gamedays only. Check whether the Padres are home.
Don't walk across downtown for a deal that's been switched off for the week.

Where the math still works
Whiskey Girl has the widest window downtown: Monday–Friday 3–7PM, $7 drafts, wells and house wine, half off select apps. Four hours. You can walk in at 3PM — when the neighborhood is nearer half full than full — and still be inside the deal. It's the only Gaslamp happy hour that meaningfully overlaps the calm part of the curve.
Gaslamp Tavern runs daily 3–6PM: $2 off drafts, wine and cocktails, $6 wells, $2 shareables. Daily is the word doing the work during a convention that runs through Sunday. Most downtown happy hours are Monday–Friday and quietly vanish for the weekend, which is when Comic-Con peaks.
Rustic Root is the weekend answer: Saturday–Sunday 3–5PM, half off drafts, $6 wells, $9 cocktails. Saturday of Comic-Con is the worst crowd of the year. A 3PM start is how you get in front of it.
Altitude Sky Lounge is Monday–Friday 5–7PM, $5 domestic drafts and $7 premium well cocktails, on a rooftop overlooking the convention center. It will be mobbed. That's the trade you're making, and for one drink that week it's probably worth it.
East Village is the actual play
Here's where the data gets genuinely useful. East Village sits just east of the convention center — same walk — but it isn't the Gaslamp, and it doesn't take the same wave.
Werewolf runs Monday–Friday 3–6PM: $5 wells and house lagers, $6 drafts, $7 sliders. Its typical curve is far flatter through the afternoon than the Gaslamp average — a room that fills late instead of filling at 6. During Comic-Con, fills late is worth more than any drink special.
The whole strategy is one line
Go at 3PM, not 7PM. Every useful happy-hour window downtown opens between 3 and 5 and dies by 7, and the room is full by 6. The exhibit hall empties around 7PM and pours everybody into the neighborhood at once, by which point the deals are over and the rooms are full. Those two facts are the same fact.
If your badge day is flexible: Thursday afternoon is meaningfully calmer than Saturday afternoon, and the 3–5PM Thursday window is the best drinking hour of the convention.
