SDSU college bars in San Diego.

Updated every few minutes · color-coded chill → packed

SDSU's real nightlife isn't on campus or even in the College Area — on weekends it migrates to Pacific Beach, where Garnet Avenue turns into the unofficial student union. The bars here run young, loud, and beach-casual. Typhoon Saloon is the college-bar classic; Bar West brings the DJ-and-dance-floor crowd; PB Shore Club runs the beachfront day-drink that rolls into night; and Open Bar is the cheap, packed, anything-goes dive everyone ends up at. The College Area near campus has a few spots, but PB is the move.

The college crowd.

Typhoon Saloon
the Garnet Avenue college-bar institution — DJ, dance floor, the SDSU weekend classic
Bar West
nightclub energy in PB, DJs and bottle service, the dressed-up college night
PB Shore Club
beachfront, day-drink into night, the Saturday-afternoon-to-close anchor
710 Beach Club
live music and cover bands on Garnet, a loud, packed, college-heavy crowd
Open Bar
the cheap, no-frills PB dive — sticky floors, strong pours, always busy

How to use the live map.

PB on a weekend is shoulder-to-shoulder, and the line at the wrong spot can eat an hour. The Jellyfish live map shows which Garnet Avenue bars are packed versus which still have room, so the night starts with a drink instead of a wait.

Frequently asked questions.

Where do SDSU students go out?

Pacific Beach, mostly — Garnet Avenue is the weekend center of gravity for the San Diego State crowd. The College Area near campus has a handful of spots, but the bigger party scene is in PB, a short rideshare from campus.

Is the nightlife in the College Area or Pacific Beach?

Both exist, but Pacific Beach wins on weekends — it has the density of bars, the beach, and the crowd. The College Area is more of a weeknight, walk-from-the-dorms scene. Most students head to PB when they want a real night out.

What's the best night to go out near SDSU?

Thursday is the classic college going-out night, and Friday and Saturday are the big ones in Pacific Beach. Game days and the start of each semester are especially busy along Garnet.

Are SDSU bars 21+?

Most Pacific Beach bars are 21+ at night, like everywhere in California. A few spots are 18+ for live shows or earlier in the evening, but plan on needing a valid 21+ ID for the Garnet Avenue bar scene after dark.
