Pre-approved company description for articles, decks, and press releases. ~80 words.

Jellyfish is the first real-time occupancy data platform for the social and nightlife industry. We measure how many people are inside every bar, lounge, restaurant, and rooftop — right now, in real time. The consumer-facing surface is a free mobile app that shows users the live occupancy of every venue in their city; underneath, we're building the occupancy dataset that will become the long-term moat for live social data. Founded in 2017 by James Williamson. Launching in San Diego summer 2026.

James Williamson

Founder & CEO · Penn State '17 · OC native · San Diego HQ

Three companies built before this one. The Equation to a Good Time started as a college framework on a napkin at a State College bar in 2017 — Jellyfish is what happened when nine years of patient iteration finally lined up with the right product, the right team, and the right city. James leads the company hands-on from San Diego. He still answers his own emails.

"Going out is one of the few things software hasn't actually fixed yet. We're fixing it — starting with our own backyard, then every city worth a Saturday night."

Talking points

The lines we'd actually quote.

Pre-approved soundbites. Use verbatim, paraphrase, or expand on any of these.

01 · The thesis

It's 2026. We mapped the moon. We're flying to Mars. We're still guessing where to go out tonight.

Why this exists. Real-time signal for every other live thing in your city — except nightlife. We built that thing.

02 · The product

We don't describe places. We measure them.

Yelp shows you 2019. Google shows you averages. Jellyfish shows you what's actually inside every venue, right now.

03 · The voice

Built quietly since 2017. Shipping loud now.

Nine years of patient iteration before the launch. Not a hot-take startup — a long bet finally on the runway.

04 · The moat

An occupancy data company that ships a great consumer app on top.

The app is the consumer surface. The dataset (real-time foot traffic across every nightlife venue) is the long-term moat.

05 · The vision

From San Diego to every city worth a Saturday night.

SD launch summer 2026. LA + OC follow. NY, Miami, Vegas, Austin, Nashville, Chicago, Atlanta over the next five years.

06 · The "why now"

Every other live thing in your city is solved. Going out is the last one.

Flight tracking, traffic, stock prices — all live. But "is that rooftop on tonight?" still requires a phone call. That's the unlock.

Voice guide

How we sound (and don't).

A few rules so the brand reads consistently across every press surface.

✓ Do
  • "Live nightlife app" or "real-time occupancy platform"
  • San Diego first · LA + OC next
  • Specific venues by name when relevant (Bang Bang, PB AleHouse, Tower 13)
  • Numbers: 1,500+ waitlist, 4,700+ venues mapped
  • Founder name spelled "James Williamson" (one L)
  • Brand name is "Jellyfish" — single word, capitalized
✗ Don't
  • "Yelp for nightlife" (we're real-time, they're reviews — different category)
  • "Social network" (we're a discovery + planning tool with social layer)
  • "AI-powered nightlife app" (AI is a feature, not the headline)
  • Lowercase or all-caps "jellyfish" / "JELLYFISH"
  • "Uber for X" / "Tinder for X" comparisons
  • "Bar Rescue in your pocket" (don't say it, even though it's accurate)
