Every "best bars in San Diego" list tells you where. None of them tell you when. A bar that is perfect at 6pm on a Tuesday can be a forty-minute door line on Saturday, and the list does not know the difference. So this one is ordered by what you actually want out of the night, and every pick says when it is worth going.
Everything here is open. All of it is checked against our own map of more than a thousand San Diego bars, and picked on a mix of what the city rates highly and what holds up once you are inside.
If you only go to one
False Idol is hidden behind Craft & Commerce in Little Italy, and it is the one to show someone who thinks they have seen San Diego. A tiki room done seriously — 1,500 reviews at 4.7, which almost nothing with a secret entrance manages. Reservations help on a weekend. Happy hour is Monday to Friday, 5 to 6, $9 tiki cocktails and $5 beers. One hour. It is also the easiest way in.
The neighborhood bar
Aero Club Bar in Uptown is what a neighborhood bar is supposed to be. A wall of whiskey, no attitude about it, and a happy hour that runs daily from 2 to 7 with $5 drafts, bottles, wells and wines. Five hours, every day of the week. That is close to unheard of in this city. Go on a weekday afternoon and you will understand why people have been coming here for decades.
Beer, without the tourist markup
San Diego's whole reputation is beer, and two places carry it. Blind Lady Ale House in University Heights is the one locals name first — 4.7 across 1,492 reviews, $6 beers Friday afternoons and Saturdays from noon, and $5 all night on Mondays. AleSmith is the pilgrimage. A serious brewery that rewards the drive.
If you are north, Pure Project in Carlsbad rates a 4.9 — the highest score any bar in the county holds with real review volume behind it.
When there are eight of you
The Balboa in Little Italy handles a table of eight better than almost anywhere downtown, and the happy hour is Tuesday to Friday, 4 to 6: $6 wells, wine and beer, with a $20 burger-and-beer combo. Werewolf downtown is the other one — 3,188 reviews, $5 wells and house lagers from 3 to 6 on weekdays, and enough room that showing up as six people is nobody's problem.
Jellyfish_ shows you how many people are at the bars.
The one that is actually fun
Good Night John Boy downtown holds a 4.9 — the highest-rated bar in the city with meaningful volume behind it. Disco, a packed floor, no pretension about any of it. It is a late room. Going at nine is going early. Jellyfish_ will tell you whether it has got there yet, so you walk into a room instead of ahead of one.
Urban MO's in Hillcrest is the other answer, and the busiest bar in its neighborhood by a distance. Happy hour is Monday to Friday from 2 to 6: $3 wells, $3 appetizers.
The pub
The Field downtown is the Irish bar that predates the Gaslamp's current version of itself, 2,341 reviews deep, with happy hour Monday to Friday 3 to 7.
When to actually go
This is the part the other lists leave out. The bars on our map run on a curve through the evening, and the curve is different in every neighborhood.
Downtown and the Gaslamp do not really turn on until after ten. Pacific Beach is already filling up by 4PM and peaks around eight. North Park is quiet at 5PM and hits its ceiling around eight. Hillcrest climbs late and keeps climbing past ten. University Heights is nearly empty at five and full by nine.
The practical version: before seven you get to choose your bar, after nine you get the room at full tilt. In between, you are rolling dice on a door line.
That is also the honest limit of a curve. It tells you what a Tuesday usually does, not what tonight is doing. I live here and I drink at most of these. What I could never tell from the sidewalk was which of the small rooms was already full. So we built Jellyfish_. It is free, it is new, and you are early — people check in while they are out, and that is what updates it.
